Forest Service's Log Sale Plan Spurs Suit Threat.

PECOS As environmentalists vowed Thursday to sue to stop a proposed burnt timber sale in the Viveash Fire area, Forest Service officials said the sale, although not set in stone, is meant to boost small, local businesses.

"We will contest it every step of the way," said Sam Hitt of Santa Fe-based Forest Guardians in an interview with the Journal.

At issue is a proposed salvage timber sale that would remove up to 24 million board feet of blackened timber from up to 7,000 acres of Santa Fe National Forest that burned in last summer's Viveash Fire near Pecos. So far, the Forest Service has merely proposed the sale, and the details of any activity are still soft. …
