Bienvenidos Food Bank Almost Overdrawn.

The next time you open the refrigerator, Bienvenidos Outreach hopes you'll remember the four empty freezers at the food bank in Santa Fe.

Families struggling to make ends meet, and the homeless, sometimes, are turned away when the cupboards are bare.

Bienvenidos Outreach has a tiny office lined with five tall shelves, but only one held a collection of canned vegetables.

The rest are waiting for food, the kind of meal someone can pop open and eat uncooked. Pop-top Spam is perfect, as well as dried fruit and nuts.

The nonprofit food pantry, which opened nearly 12 years ago, relies on donations and a September auction to stay stocked. Usually, the windfall during Christmas lasts six months.

The shelves and refrigerators are bankrupt for two reasons: donations have fallen off since Christmas, a typical trend, and the number of hungry people has increased. …
