If you live in Albuquerque, the Sandia Mountains are there: They form the eastern skyline, they account for our weather (dry on the west side, wet on the east side), and they provide recreation for area residents.

The Sandias' recreational offerings are myriad, from biking in the foothills to hang gliding off the crest. But it's the mountains' miles of hiking trails some well known and others relatively obscure that call to Mike Coltrin.

Coltrin is a Sandia National Laboratories scientist and a good hiker, a man who makes his own challenges. He had hiked the Sandias' trails for years without thinking about it much, using the same books that are standard references for trails on the mountain again and again. …
