WASHINGTON Millions of Americans who log onto a computer each day are deluged with unsolicited e-mails pushing everything from pornography to extra income with no extra effort.

Help for the annoyed could be on the way in the form of a bill sponsored by Rep. Heather Wilson, R-N.M. The Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail Act of 2001, which sailed through the House Commerce Committee on Wednesday, would give consumers and Internet service providers tools to keep unwanted e-mails or "spam" at bay.

"There is a dark side to the Internet, and parents should be able to make it a little safer," Wilson said after the committee unanimously approved her bill. …
