Loss of Herd Feared From State Decision

Several Manzano Mountains residents worry that the new 2001-02 Big Game Proclamation adopted last fall by the New Mexico Game and Fish Department could wipe out a small herd of elk new to their area.

But state Game and Fish officials disagree.

For the first time, the regulations designate Unit 14 as an unlimited licensing area for all types of elk hunting and male and female elk. Unit 14 covers an area from Albuquerque to Bernardo along Interstate 25, east along U.S. 60 to N.M. 41, north to Moriarty and west along U.S. 285.

Unlimited licensing, according to local game warden Ross Morgan, means if someone asks for a lottery on a Unit 14 license, they are guaranteed to receive a license to hunt for one elk. Morgan explained that several areas in New Mexico have unlimited licensing on both elk and deer, while some have restricted licensing. …
