* Estancia boys keep tradition alive by scoring highest as team at Time Trials

The gray, cold, windy Saturday at Estancia High was certainly not tailor-made for quality track and field marks.

Still, the results of the annual Bear Time Trials suited Estancia coach Grey Nevelos just fine.

In what has become as much a tradition as the meet itself, the Estancia boys walked away with another Bear Time Trials team title by scoring 136.5 points.

Nevelos can't remember the last time the seven-time defending district champion Bears suffered a setback in this meet.

Pojoaque, however, did give Estancia a run for its money. The distance-runner-rich Elks notched 123 points for second place, far ahead of third-place finisher St. Mike's of Santa Fe with 86.5.

Not surprisingly, Estancia's victory was fueled by the strong legs of two-time defending Class 2A 100-meter state champion and defending 200-meter state champ Emmanuel Zupko.

The speedy junior, as expected, captured both dashes not to mention the long jump even if his final times were slowed by the windy conditions. …
