Efforts to thin overgrown areas in the East Mountains urban interface, where homes touch the forest, have been on hold until snows melt and the mud dries.

But on Friday, Sen. Sue Wilson, R-Albuquerque, who is leading a public-private effort to thin overgrown areas along N.M. 337 in an effort to reduce the risk of wildfire, called a group of fire managers and community volunteers back to action.

Since September, elected officials and representatives of state and local fire and land management agencies have been working with East Mountains residents to thin overgrown forests on private and public lands. …
