Census figures released last week showing Valencia County to be the state's third-fastest-growing county aren't surprising to some.

"Personally, I think we've had more growth than the census is saying," Sheriff Juan Julian said Wednesday.

Valencia County grew by 46.2 percent from 1990 to 2000, according to the census. Only Torrance County, which grew 64.4 percent over the past decade, and Lincoln County, with a 58.9 percent population boom, surpassed Valencia's growth rate.

In terms of raw numbers, the county grew from 45,235 people in 1990 to 66,152 in 2000. …
