Domenici Asks State To Help With Trade Route.

U.S. 87 Competing for Federal Designation

New Mexico's senior senator on Wednesday urged the state highway department to support a plan to bring a federally designated trade route to northeastern New Mexico.

In a letter to state Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn, Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., said the agency's support could be vital to efforts to bring the so-called Ports to Plains Trade Corridor to U.S. Highway 87 through Union and Colfax counties, according to a news release from the senator.

"The trade designation would benefit the people in Raton and the rest of northeastern New Mexico," Domenici wrote. "The route makes fiscal sense to taxpayers, operational sense to the trade community and is desired by the fellow New Mexicans we serve. …
