Council's Tie Vote Kills Jail Contract With County.

What was expected to be a routine renewal of the jail contract the city of Santa Fe has with Santa Fe County on Wednesday turned into a defeat for the $731,000 agreement negotiators forged.

Now, with most city lawmakers upset with the current daily $65-per-inmate the county charges, negotiators predict Santa Fe taxpayers could possibly pay even more.

On a 4-4 vote Wednesday, the City Council was unable to secure a needed fifth "yea" to extend the $65 rate. Mayor Larry Delgado was excused from Wednesday's meeting; Councilor Matthew Ortiz said he thought the mayor was vacationing with his family.

The county pays jail operator Cornell Companies $14 a day per inmate. …
