Something near and dear to my heart is when the newly independent learn how to say "no" to some (if not all) of their wants, needs, hair-brained desires.

It can be absolutely impossible to say no, especially when there's nobody around to do it for you. The maternal voice in the back of the head is drowned out by a louder call to "Do it! Do it! Do it!"

I've found that indulgence (to a point) is the best way to learn self-restraint. For a detailed example, several years ago, I shared a house with three guys. To protect the identity of the guilty parties, I will refer to them as Roommate A, Roommate B and Roommate C. …
