Should voters have a means to remove elected officials for corruption, abuse of office or incompetence? Certainly. But should voters have a mechanism by which to pursue immediate political gratification when they merely disagree with an official's action or position?

Councilor Mike Williams' opposition to Mayor John Jennings' nominees for a council seat and for a position on the planning commission put him in the cross hairs of a recall effort.

If enough voters in Williams' District 1 sign a recall petition, the question will go to a public vote at a cost ranging upwards of $6,000.

How many signatures is enough? Fifteen.

Fifteen people who disagree with a councilor can force a special election on the rest of the district and its expense on the whole city. …
