St. Michael's Looking Like a State Tourney Team.(Sports)

Horsemen Hold Off Sundevils, 4-2

With nearly 150 years of history under its belt, St. Michael's High School is easily the oldest high school in the state. Yet when it comes to state baseball trophies and postseason glory, there's nothing in the trophy case but empty space and dusty shelves.

Not once in school history has the baseball team won a state championship. Although several talented teams and countless gifted players have come and gone over the years, none has brought home even a single state title.

Judging by the way the current Horsemen are playing, history may be in for a rewrite.

On Tuesday, the team took its latest step in what is amounting to a storybook season. In a game that was nothing more than a tuneup for the start of the District 2-3A campaign, the red-hot Horsemen coasted to a sixth straight victory and eighth in nine games against nondistrict rival Espanola Valley.

Scoring two runs in each of the first two innings, the Horsemen survived both a Sundevils rally and their own lackluster performance to take the 4-2 win. …
