I'm looking at something like this on the computer monitor: "MSGSRV32 caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff9dba7."

But I'm thinking about Earl Wangerin, who wrote to me on his 25-year-old Smith-Corona manual typewriter. I can hear the typebars hitting the paper. I can hear the roller cranking around when he hits the carriage return lever.

I see the word "tried" in his letter and how it came out "trie" and how after he pulled the paper from the roller, he took a ballpoint pen and squeezed in the "d" so "trie" not only became "tried," but became a little more like its writer and its reader, which is to say, imperfect, the way all writers and readers really are. …
