Reserve Garcia Plays Pivotal Role for UNM


The footwear hardly could be described as Air Cristal or Sky Garcia.

The boot that University of New Mexico sophomore basketball guard Cristal Garcia was wearing on her right foot Tuesday would be better illustrated with the tag Grounded Guard.

If that holds true tonight, it could deal a serious blow to the Lobos' hopes of bringing the school its first team national championship in any sport.

Normally, an injured 5-foot, 5-inch guard who plays only 7.4 minutes a game isn't a cause for concern for either team.

But the fact Garcia tore a ligament on her right foot Saturday in the final minute of UNM's 68-43 shellacking of Hawaii could have a special significance. The Lobos play host to Ohio State (21-11) in the championship game of the Women's National Invitation Tournament before a sellout crowd of 18,018. …
