Phelps Dodge Cites High Cost of Energy

Eighty-five miners in southern New Mexico have been told by Phelps Dodge Corp. that their jobs will be cut because of high energy costs and low copper prices, the company announced Monday.

The job cuts at Chino Mines Co. near Silver City, where about 1,000 people work, could be the first of several hundred the Phoenix-based mining conglomerate says it may have to make this summer.

Nearly 2,000 more workers will be idled at four mines as other operations are scaled back or temporarily shut down from June through September. The moves are part of a plan by Phelps Dodge to reduce the amount of money it has found itself spending because of high energy costs. …
