The athletic director sports many duties at Capital High School

For freshly appointed Capital High School athletic director Matt Martinez, keeping busy has become less of a job and more of a personality trait since taking over Feb. 6.

A man of many hats a husband, father, baseball coach, girls soccer coach, teacher and high school administrator Martinez seems to be in perpetual motion. Working 12-hour days has become commonplace.

Leaving for work every morning around 7:15, he often does not return until well into the evening.

"That's what being a head coach and an AD at the same time has done," he said. "But I enjoy doing both. It's what I wanted all along. My wife (Cindy) has been pretty patient with me, especially with me being a baseball coach and a father. It does make for some long days though and they're even longer with baseball. I like coaching, but it has put a strain on things."

Although working almost nonstop, Martinez seems happy in his new surroundings. Faced with the task of rebuilding the Jaguars' fragile and largely underfunded athletic department, he says his future as a coach at Capital is still undetermined. …
