Santa Feans concerned about development on vacant property near them may soon have a new weapon government-sponsored mediation.

In reaction to last year's debate over infill development, City Councilor Karen Heldmeyer has proposed a pilot program in which landowners would meet existing neighbors before any blueprints are drawn.

The proposal is intended to have a mediator with a background in land use help both sides agree on what's appropriate for a property and settle differences.

"This will not necessarily forestall all arguments," Heldmeyer said Monday at a Public Works Committee meeting.

Nonetheless, the program could save developers money on blueprints for buildings that will never be built, she said. …
