Agua Fria, Sweeney Get Federal Money

In Santa Fe, reading skills will get an extra push and $499,576 at Agua Fria and Sweeney elementary schools over the next two years.

Santa Fe Public Schools received the money through the federal Reading Excellence Act.

Gloria Rendon, an associate superintendent who helped write the grant application, said the schools will share the money for training teachers and parents in how to get children reading by the third grade.

"We're pretty proud," she said of the grant award.

The school district's goal is for Agua Fria and Sweeney to become models for the district's literacy improvement initiative. …
