Senior Pow-Wow honors high school students.(Youth Express)

More than 200 Native American high school seniors are preparing to graduate from various Albuquerque schools in May. But first, they will celebrate in the traditional manner of their pueblos and tribes.

The annual Senior Pow-Wow is open to the public Friday at the Highland High School Gym, 4700 Coal SE. The evening begins with a Gourd Dance at 5 p.m. The colorful Grand Entry is set for 7:30 p.m.

Powwows, a Plains Indian tradition transplanted in recent decades to the Southwest, can be considered highly social events for native peoples, according to Sean Callan, a native studies teacher at West Mesa High School.

"This is a time to recognize that although these students are finishing high school and going on with their education, it's still good to recognize the old ways," he said. …
