Slots at Racetracks Could Jeopardize Tribal Deals.(New Mexico)

SANTA FE An Indian gambling official said Monday it's unclear what New Mexico tribes with casinos might do if Gov. Gary Johnson signs a bill to allow more slot machines at non-Indian racetracks.

But Frank Chaves, executive director of the New Mexico Indian Gaming Association, contended that expansion of non-Indian gambling could threaten approval of a new state-tribal compact by the U.S. Department of Interior.

The recently adjourned Legislature approved legislation that would increase the number of slot machines allowed at racetracks from 300 to 750. Johnson has said he would veto the measure if it would jeopardize a new Indian gambling compact, which he negotiated with 10 pueblos and the Jicarilla Apaches and which the Legislature later approved. …
