* LodeStar Astronomy Center falls far short of revenue projections

The LodeStar Astronomy Center has merged its gift shop operations with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science's store as part of an effort to get the LodeStar center's finances in order.

"The store was losing revenue in spite of a very dedicated staff," said David Beining, acting director of the astronomy center, which is run by the University of New Mexico.

The store merger is one of several steps being taken to stem the financial bleeding at LodeStar, where revenue has fallen far short of original projections.

Those projections called for the LodeStar center, an astronomy education center within the Natural History Museum, to be self-sustaining, with revenue from planetarium shows, the gift shop and a motion-simulator ride covering its costs. …
