PATCHING THINGS UP DOWNTOWN: Curt Brewer says that while Third from Central to Lead was repaved last year, a crew went in right after the work and chipped away a chunk "right in the middle of the street" at Third and Silver. Guess what? The chipped pavement is still there, along with the hole. So what's the deal?

Ray Chavez, city Street Maintenance Division manager, got an inspector out there who tracked down the trouble spot and discovered the paving contractor had gone back in to do work and never cleaned things up after that.

Chavez says it's routine after a paving job to go back in and adjust manholes and water valves. …
