Councilors Want More In Cable.

* Official welcomes an audit, but company isn't planning a major upgrade in service soon

City councilors see the expiration of TCI Cablevision's franchise with the city and a pending acquisition of the company by Comcast Cable as an opportunity to demand more and better service.

Even with a new owner and a new franchise, however, Santa Fe cable customers should not be looking for high-speed computer access to the Internet through their cable boxes anytime soon.

Company executives said upgrading the system to allow two-way communication will require a major financial investment.

Nonetheless, the City Council wants a clearer picture of what subscribers are already provided. City Councilor Carol Robertson Lopez said the city should audit the cable company's books before negotiating with TCI or Comcast.

"We absolutely need to do an outside audit," said Lopez, who has asked the City Attorney's Office to look into the issue. …
