Las Cruces retailers welcome new stores on the booming east side

LAS CRUCES Mesilla Valley Mall general manager Candy Allen isn't worried about a new shopping center being built across the street.

In fact, she welcomes the Laguna Seca strip mall to the Las Cruces business community.

"All of that complements the mall," she says. "We see traffic picking up, because the population has boomed."

For more than 20 years, Mesilla Valley Mall has been the anchor for a growing and very healthy retail community on the city's bustling east side.

In the last few years, national chains such as Target, Albertsons and Home Depot have set up shop near Lohman Avenue and Interstate 25, which is considered one of the busiest retail corners in the city.

The Laguna Seca complex hasn't been completed; however, that hasn't stopped Big 5 Sporting Goods from opening its doors, according to Julie Stair with the Laguna Seca Ltd. …
