Manager Says Residents Favor Plan Over Others

Albuquerque's plan to tap the Rio Grande for drinking water is beginning to take shape.

Water Resources Manager John Stomp said local residents apparently favor building an adjustable dam in the river just north of Paseo del Norte over two other methods for withdrawing river water. City officials still are analyzing the options and haven't decided which diversion method they prefer.

The 600-foot-wide dam is the cheapest of the three methods under consideration, costing $150 million to $170 million, Stomp said. It also could include a passageway for fish and other features, he said. …
