Assembling Big I's puzzle pieces a colossal task

Looking down from the top of the Big I's big new bridge, Van Groves can see the whole thing in his mind's eye.

The rest of us might see half-finished road decks, a tangle of detouring traffic and a swarm of earth-moving equipment.

Groves can connect the dots between what is and what will be and can see the clean line of the future northbound lanes and the gentle sweep of the grand new bridges.

To get there, Groves must oversee the largest collection of heavy construction equipment New Mexico has ever seen, from 135 pickup trucks to fleets of earth movers and cement trucks to the two largest cranes in New Mexico.

Groves is project manager of the Big I construction for Twin Mountain Construction II Co., the contractor hired by the state to oversee the $286 million job. …
