Schools Should Observe King Day.(Opinion)

The Santa Fe school board is catching plenty of heat for voting out school observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. But let's remember what the vote was really about: a new school calendar with five fewer holidays and five more days of school.

We're in favor of more school days, and so were 53 percent of parents and school staffers polled on the issue.

That said, we agree with school superintendent Veronica Garcia that the board ought to reinstate the holiday that honors the civil rights leader.

It shouldn't be hard for the board to come up with a compromise calendar that allows more continuous instruction the goal of the new schedule yet honors King, too. …
