Running Water Is Misleading.(Opinion)


Spring is upon us. The crocus have bloomed, the tulips are coming along. And all over northern New Mexico, canyons and arroyos are coursing with runoff water a welcome sight and sound that in many places, we haven't experienced for a couple of years at least.

Numbers back up our casual observations of the weather. According to the National Resource Conservation Service, which keeps track of these things, snowpack in the Pecos basin is three times bigger than it was last year. Over in the Jemez, the conservation service's snow-measuring station at Quemazon, where the Cerro Grande Fire burned, records total precipitation almost four times greater than at this time last year. …
