ABIQUIU On a dusty ranch nestled along the Rio Chama, science is breeding a better bull for New Mexico's cattle ranchers.

Nearly 50 performance-tested bulls and heifers strutted their stuff Saturday in front of a boot-wearing crowd at the fifth annual Northern New Mexico Bull Test and Heifer Development Sale.

"Look at the beefy frame on this one," the auctioneer, sitting on a makeshift stage of alfalfa bales, yelled as a Black Angus from Arizona trotted into the corral.

"Ready to turn loose on your cows," he said, drawing giggles from the audience. …
