* Musicians appreciate a spiritual quality in composer's works

Some music festivals are stuffed into a single concert. Some carry forth all summer. Some are spread over nine days, as the Santa Fe Pro Musica is doing in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach from Saturday, March 31, through April 8.

Musicians are coming from all over to play and sing Bach's music in seven concerts.

"As a musician, playing Bach is a spiritually uplifting experience," said conductor/cellist Kenneth Slowik, who is coming from Washington, D.C., where he directs the chamber music program at the Smithsonian Institution.

Besides containing and solving musical problems, Bach's music retains a spiritual element that Slowik perceives as being more than Christian or ethereal. …
