* Former bike mechanic wants her large installation to cast a spell on viewers

A lime-green, 1972 Volvo wagon is Erika Wanenmacher's punk sport utility vehicle. Under her expert mechanical hands the Volvo engine has been replaced by a 350 cc, V8 Chevy engine that runs on propane. The entire cooling system had to be redone to accommodate the massive engine and automatic Chevy transmission. "This is the hardest thing I've ever done," says Wanenmacher, who was a bike mechanic for 10 years.

Instead of thinking about tooling around town in her newly modified car and breaking in the engine, Wanenmacher is driving the vibrant vehicle to SITE Santa Fe to make it the centerpiece of her large-scale installation called "Grimoire. …
