* Owner won't comment on station's future, but rumors have classical-music lovers worried

Fans of New Mexico's only full-time classical music radio station are up in arms over rumors that KHFM (96.3) may go silent April 1.

The station's owner is already silent, refusing to discuss the future of KHFM and the silence is compounding the anxiety of longtime listeners.

Florence Wengerd, for instance, said she writes, e-mails or calls Citadel Communications Inc. officials nearly every day to tell them how horrible it would be if they killed KHFM.

KHFM is the highest-rated classical station in the country, according to the fall Arbitron ratings, and has been on the air in New Mexico for 46 years. …
