Coin drive raises money to buy stuffed animals and books for hospitalized children

A frightening three-day stay in the hospital taught 7-year-old Amanda Kleist the meaning of sharing. "I was very scared," Amanda recalls of the emergency last January. "But it wasn't too bad when I had my Puffalump."

Amanda, a first-grader at San Antonito Elementary School in the East Mountains, recovered quickly from the serious bacterial infection that had caused high fevers and vomiting. But during her hospitalization, she saw other sick children and babies who were not so fortunate.

The experience of hearing other crying children in the pediatric ward prompted Amanda and her mother, Rebecca Kleist, to start a penny drive called Coins of Care. …
