Varsity Rookie Makes an Impression for Rio Grande.(Sports)

Peter Baca made an auspicious varsity debut for the Rio Grande baseball team Saturday, collecting three hits and helping the Ravens to a 9-5 victory over Albuquerque Academy.

Baca was called up from the junior varsity and started at shortstop. In addition to playing well in the field, he finished 3 for 4, scored two runs, stole a base and executed a perfect hit-and-run play.

"Not bad for his first varsity game," Ravens coach Orlando Griego said with a smile. "We needed a lift today, and Peter gave us one."

Griego said the win was important because it came one day after Rio Grande committed seven errors in one inning of a loss at Albuquerque High. The Ravens (8-4) were much sharper Saturday, leading all the way against the Chargers (3-5-1). …
