Bush Policy May Tap Natural Gas Reserves

Two chunks of federal land in New Mexico that hold potentially lucrative reserves of natural gas might be opened to new drilling under the President Bush administration, experts said this week.

Those areas near Carlsbad and Raton Otero Mesa and Valle Vidal are likely to be rare examples of federal policy changes in New Mexico. However, a new federal government climate, friendlier to industry, could make it easier for oil and gas companies to expand drilling in other parts of New Mexico and the U.S.

Bush has said he wants to increase oil and gas production in the U.S. by opening such areas as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

Bush wants to reduce a U.S. dependence on foreign oil, with all of its perils for national security and the domestic economy. …
