Resistant Strains, Epidemic Cited

New Mexico's tuberculosis rate has been on the decline, but that trend may reverse if something isn't done to stem the global epidemic of the disease and the growth of antibiotic-resistant strains.

That warning came Friday from a group of experts who gathered in Albuquerque to commemorate World TB Day with a news conference.

"Disease is globalized. You can't erect a wall at the border and keep it out," said Heidi Brooks, an Albuquerque volunteer with RESULTS, a citizens' lobbying group that works against the effects of hunger and poverty worldwide.
