Foot-Mouth Reminder of 1995 Scare.

Every news story is a reminder. Each time I read about the continuing plight of British farmers grimly dealing with the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, I am reminded of an equine disease that disrupted New Mexico's horse community six years ago.

The problem was not repeat not foot-and-mouth disease in the summer of 1995. But it was a similar virus that also produces blisters of the mouth, and sometimes hoof, and is called vesicular stomatitis. The outbreak closed down parts of the state's horse industry from May to November.

So similar was vesicular stomatitis to foot-and-mouth that the difference could only be determined by a laboratory blood test. …
