St. Michael's To Play Capital Today

It will be an all-Santa Fe championship game today in the 20th annual St. Michael's Baseball Tournament.

Two of the City Different's high school teams excelled during Friday's semifinal action at Brother Edward Field at St. Michael's.

In the first game, surging Capital survived a furious rally from Las Vegas Robertson to post its third straight win.

In the nightcap, tournament host St. Michael's broke out of a one-day offensive slump by hammering Socorro.

ST. MICHAEL'S 19, SOCORRO 2: This one was over almost as soon as it started.

Sending nine men to the plate in the bottom of the first and 15 more in the bottom of the second, the Horsemen blitzed the Socorro pitching staff with 16 hits and four home runs. Shortstop Josh Abeyta hit two of those en route to collecting three hits and four runs batted in for St. Michael's (6-1).

The win moves the Horsemen into today's championship game, making it six straight years the tournament hosts have played in the final game.

"That streak is real important to us, so we always set that as a goal coming in," said St. Michael's head coach Mark Pierce, whose Horsemen have won all five championship games during the streak. …
