Jazz musicians' talents increase music's spontaneity.

Does familiarity breed apathy? It didn't with the Modern Jazz Quartet.

And it certainly doesn't with two longstanding members of Connie Crothers' respected ensemble of improvising musicians.

Saxophonist Richard Tabnik has been with Crothers for more than 20 years and drummer Roger Mancuso has worked with her for 25 years.

But in Crothers' mind, their tenure says something more about the intensity of the music they create.

"Because everybody in this band is a genuine and profound improvisor, when we express this music through time, the intuitive quality of the music gets stronger," Crothers said in a phone interview from her home in New York City. …
