* Northern New Mexico tales recreate days before radio, television

A new book of stories rescued from the memory of a 103-year-old Chimayo resident provides a glimpse into the world of northern New Mexico's popular entertainment before television even before radio.

"Benigna's Chimayo: Cuentos from the Old Plaza" is a collection of stories told by Benigna Ortega Chavez and dutifully rewritten by her grandson Don J. Usner.

The introduction traces the stories back eight generations and the second half of the book provides a translation into the archaic Spanish that's peculiar to northern New Mexico.

It's a family collaboration all the text, photographs and drawings were produced by Benigna's offspring. …
