Hosts Winners In Opening Round

Thursday's opening day of the 20th annual St. Michael's Baseball Tournament had a little of everything: home runs, overpowering pitching, exciting rallies and offensive explosions.

In first round action, Capital, Socorro, Las Vegas Robertson and tournament host St. Michael's each picked up wins to advance into today's semifinal round. The Horsemen will meet Socorro at 3:30 p.m., while the Jaguars will face Robertson in the other semifinal at 1 p.m.

Consolation play gets started with today's 8 a.m. contest between McCurdy and Tucumcari. Pojoaque will play Taos at 10:30.

ST. MICHAEL'S 5, TUCUMCARI 2: Entering the tournament as the favorite, St. Mike's got a scare from the upstart Rattlers (1-4) before rallying for the win with four runs in its final at-bat.

Held to four hits and a single run in the first five innings by Tucumcari starting pitcher Chris McKinney, the Horsemen (5-1) finally broke through when Josh Abeyta delivered a game-tying single with two outs in the sixth. After McKinney hit the next batter to load the bases, Kyle Schnitger lined a bases-clearing double to the alley in left-center for a 5-2 lead. …
