Highway Upgrade Died in Session.

A bill to expand U.S. Highway 64/87 in northern New Mexico withered and died last week in the Legislature, taking with it any immediate hope of state funding to improve the two-lane highway.

Senate Bill 207 remained stuck in the Senate Finance Committee when the legislative session ended Saturday.

"It won't be passed," said Sen. Patrick Lyons, R-Cuervo.

Lyons introduced the bill on Jan. 26 requesting $1.7 billion to expand several roads from two to four lanes throughout the state, including U.S. 64/87 from the Texas border near Clayton to Raton.

Had the bill passed, the appropriation would have heightened the highway's appeal as a potential federal trade route. …
