Employees Seeking Better Pay, Benefits

University of New Mexico professional staff members voted Thursday to unionize to fight for better wages, benefits and working conditions.

More than 500 UNM staff members in more than 75 job categories voted for the union, while about 150 voted against, said Don Whatley, president of the New Mexico Federation of Educational Employees.

The 1,000 or so eligible staff members needed a 60 percent turnout and a simple majority to unionize.

"We won," Whatley said. "It's an overwhelming victory for unionism in New Mexico."

The election was the first of two approved by the UNM Board of Regents in January for specific workers in the educational support and technical staff areas. …
