Staff Shortages Force Temporary Change

The Albuquerque Police Department is temporarily cutting the size of its traffic unit by more than 25 percent so it can boost the number of officers handling general calls for service.

The decision will take nine officers from the traffic unit which is responsible for investigating hundreds of wrecks and doling out thousands of traffic tickets each year and place them in the five main police substations around the city. Two officers from the department's drunken driving enforcement unit also will be part of the temporary transfer, APD Deputy Chief Bill Weiland said on Tuesday. …
