Latest Numbers Offer a Taste Of Census Figures Yet to Come.

Census Bureau questionnaires arrived in the mail and thousands of agency workers hit the streets, pestering the public to stand up and be counted and to reveal details about their lives.

That was a year ago.

On Thursday, information gleaned from that Census 2000 query, the 22nd taken in U.S. history, was given to state officials in New Mexico for the primary purpose of drawing new state legislative districts.

Included in the data were population figures, including ethnicity, race and age, all the way down to the neighborhood block level. That wave of information follows the December release of population totals for the country and each state, for congressional reapportionment. …
