Athlete's Attorney To Fight Suspension

An intensely emotional meeting in a judge's chambers last August about an alleged rape at the University of New Mexico implicating two Lobos football players wound up with an agreement that seemed to please everyone.

But seven months later, what initially appeared to be a model of dispute resolution has unraveled to a point where additional litigation is likely a given.

One of the two players, tailback Holmon Wiggins, has been suspended by the university, according to his lawyer.

What's more, a district court judge has sharply criticized UNM's handling of the matter. And lawyers for the two defendants say the university has not acted in good faith.

As for the university, UNM officials defend their actions as proper and say they were never duplicitous about the school's autonomy. …
