With 810 souls, Harding County has plenty of space

Most people in the state are either racial or ethnic minorities

Harding County Assessor Pete Callahan, told Wednesday by phone that the Census showed a serious population drop in the northeastern New Mexico county, had an immediate question: "Are we out of people?"

Long the least-populated county in New Mexico, Harding hardly seemed deserving of a noticeable population loss in the year 2000 go-round. But it happened.

In the 10 years since 1990, the county's population sank from 987 to 810, a decrease of 177 people, or 17.90 percent. It was the biggest percentage loss by any county in the state. …
