Come-From-Behind Victory Sweet Revenge for 1st Innings

Something was in the air on the first day of spring at the Moriarty High varsity baseball field.

For a change, it wasn't blowing dust. This wasn't even spring fever. The Pintos caught a good old-fashioned case of baseball fever.

On a calm, warm Tuesday afternoon, Moriarty erased a seven-run sixth-inning deficit in the blink of an eye and stunned unwary Albuquerque High 11-10 for a feverish come-from-behind victory.

"Moriarty baseball lost games like this in the past," said first-year varsity coach Michael Chavez. "They thought they were supposed to lose them. But this is a different group of kids. They're all baseball players. They play for the love of the game."

And nothing says love quite like a walk-off victory in the bottom half of the final frame.

For most of the contest, Albuquerque (5-4) simply seemed to toy with the young Pintos. The Bulldogs mounted a 10-3 lead after scoring nine runs in three innings off of three Moriarty pitchers.

"The kids were never worried about trailing by so many runs," said Chavez. "They're young and they don't fully believe in themselves yet, so I'd say there was a bit of uncertainty. But they never gave up."

The Pintos eliminated most doubts about a comeback victory by exploding for six hits and five runs in the sixth to pull to within 10-8. …
