Thirty-nine Mountainair High School students took a day off school March 14 for free lunch and a movie in Albuquerque.

The trip was a reward to students who had perfect attendance for the past nine-week grading period.

The school district sponsors similar trips every nine weeks to help boost attendance at the high school to meet the state requirement of a 94 percent attendance rate. Students with perfect attendance for the entire school year receive a monetary reward.

An additional attendance incentive program was recently begun at the high school, using $11,600 granted by the state. The money was awarded for high academic performance of Mountainair students on mandatory Terra Nova standardized testing. …
